ZeldHack is a custom NetHack tileset inspired by classic NES-era games such as The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros., and many others. The goal is to give NetHack a strong retro console identity while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original game.

This project represents several months of research, pixel-by-pixel work, and careful archiving to bring together a coherent and recognizable visual style. Many tiles are direct nods to iconic games—see how many you can spot.

The tileset is available in multiple resolutions. The original graphics are based on 16×16 tiles, and you can also download upscaled 32×32 and 64×64 versions depending on your setup and preferences.

In addition to the graphics, this pack includes more than 170 WAV sound effects sourced from classic NES / Famicom games. These audio files are provided as-is and are the reason a dedicated sound configuration is included.

A KRC sound configuration file is provided and is meant to be pasted at the end of your existing NetHack KRC file (remember to make a backup). This ZeldHack KRC contains only sound definitions and is ready to use, tuned for the 32×32 tileset.

Tip: to play as the Link-style character, you must choose the Ranger class 🙂
